BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES
REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING
TUESDAY, JANUARY 13, 2009
TOWN HALL MEETING ROOM 2
Present: David Burton, Carlo D’Este, Jane Dolan, Nancy Soderberg, Heather Lakatos, Dianna Smith, John Kowalski, and Helene DeFoe, Library Director.
Chairman David Burton called the meeting to order at 6:32 p.m.
Approval of Minutes
Dianna Smith motioned to accept the minutes of the Meeting of December 9, 2008 with name change correction; Jane Dolan seconded this motion; and the motion was approved, with David Burton, John Kowalski, and Heather Lakatos abstaining.
Reports
Helene DeFoe’s and Janet Burke’s monthly reports for December were reviewed and discussed. A copy of these monthly reports (which includes the CLAMS circulation report for December) are attached to the printed set of these minutes.
Mashpee Library Groundbreaking Ceremony …To be held 10 a.m., Thursday, January 15, 2009. Helene said that in addition to representatives from Board of Selectmen, Library Trustees, Planning and Construction, Friends of the Library, et al., Katherine Dibble, Vice Chairman of the Bureau of Library Commissioners, is expected to attend. Helene said that it is open to the public and anyone wishing to attend would be most welcome. After the ceremony, the attendees will adjourn to Christ the King Center for light refreshments. David Burton invited any of the Trustees to say a few words at the ceremony. The consensus was that David, as Chairman, should address the group on behalf of the Trustees.
Helene then presented to the Trustees a draft of a Town Meeting Article to be presented at the upcoming May Town Meeting seeking Town approval to create 2 positions for the FY 2011 budget since these positions must be filled when we occupy the new library facility. A copy of the drafted Article is attached to the printed set of these minutes. Jane Dolan asked what it would mean for the library if we don’t get these positions approved in time for the opening of the new building. Would we not be able to open? Helene responded that if building opens earlier than anticipated, we would still have time to go before another Town Meeting prior to occupying the new building. Helene said latest word is we would not be in the new building before May-2010. Question was raised: Would hours have
to change with new library building? Helene said “no”…not until the 2010 census figures are released and then only if we go over 15,000 in population.
Friends of the Library
Jack Kowalski said that Barbara Notarius, President of the Friends, does a great job of informing everyone of what’s happening in the Library community through her column in the Mashpee Enterprise. Everyone agreed.
Jack said that a young lady who is in the 8th grade is joining the Board of the Friends, and everyone is very excited about that since they had been seeking to add a student to the Board and this young lady is a great candidate.
Jack reported that the float used in the holiday parade was broken down and they salvaged almost everything.
Communications
David informed the Trustees of the public hearing date for the proposed roadway to be created at Joy Street in front of current temporary library location. David will forward to the Trustees a copy of the letter that had been sent to the Planning Board that states what change is being proposed for the Joy Street project.
Dianna Smith mentioned the recent passing of Cindy Parker’s mother. David explained that Cindy Parker is a past-President of the Friends and a long-time member of the Library family.
Next Meeting…Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall Meeting Room 2.
Adjournment…
Carlo D’Este motioned to adjourn the meeting; Dianna Smith seconded the motion; and the meeting adjourned at 7:15 p.m.
